Bruges: A Timeless Escape into a Medieval Dream

There are cities that enchant you from the moment you step in, and then there is Bruges—an eternal masterpiece carved in time. We stayed in a place called The Notary, a charming historic residence that instantly made us feel like we were part of a painting. The days were quiet, unhurried, and filled with the kind of moments you only notice when the world slows down. Morning walks through cobbled streets led us to the heart of the city—Market Square—where centuries-old buildings stood in harmony, casting golden shadows as the sun moved across the Flemish sky.

Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the moment you arrive, it’s easy to see why. The entire city is a tribute to medieval Europe—remarkably well-preserved, yet still very much alive. Gothic façades, stepped gables, bell towers, and winding canals come together like chapters in a fairytale. There’s a rhythm to the city: the soft lapping of water, the occasional echo of horse carriages, the scent of warm waffles from tucked-away cafés. Every street corner whispers history; every building tells a story.

One of our highlights was the visit to the Brouwerij De Halve Maan—the legendary home of Brugse Zot. The tour was immersive, but what followed was even better—their beer tasting menu. Set in the heart of the brewery, we sampled rich golden ales, dark, complex brews, and lighter, fruity notes that surprised us with every sip. Belgian beer is not just a drink—it’s an experience, an art form deeply woven into Bruges’ cultural fabric.

Our nights in Bruges were equally magical. One evening, after a long, relaxed dinner of beer-infused dishes, we wandered into the old town under the glow of medieval lamplight. It felt like the city was ours alone—quiet, romantic, and surreal. That night, as we sat by the canal reflecting on the day, we knew Bruges had stolen a piece of our hearts.

It’s hard to choose favourites when you’ve travelled to so many places, but Bruges surprised us in a way few places have. Maybe it was the timeless beauty, maybe the beer, maybe the silence that made you listen more deeply. Whatever it was, it has earned its place in our top five destinations of all time.

Bruges is not just a city you visit—it’s a city you feel. It lingers with you long after you leave.

Until next time, dear Bruges.
